Though she was more or less fired back in March, the beleaguered Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark creator is officially in the running for a Best Direction of a Musical nomination. Spider-Manpocalypse enthusiasts will remember that Taymor was awarded a slightly awkward "Original Direction By ... " credit after her ousting, and this apparently satisfies the Tonys' eligibility requirements. (Less clear is whether Reeve Carney will be eligible for a Best Spider-Man Dress Shirt Award. We have hope.) An actual nomination for Taymor seems highly unlikely, given the show's disastrous history and generally harsh reviews (our own Scott Brown: "It's a vast emptiness, void even of its animating madness"), but maybe "just happy to be eligible" is the new "just happy to be nominated." Anyway, best of luck to Less-Sad Julie Taymor! [Tonys]
