Tom Cruise will play the lead in All You Need Is Kill, a sort of Groundhog Day set during an alien war. He'll play a soldier who relives his last day again and again; over the course of this cursed time-loop, the soldier improves his battle skills and maybe learns a little something about the nature of human suffering. Director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) has been kicking Kill around for a while and shooting is expected to start at the end of 2012. In Hiroshi Sakurazaka's Japanese book, the protagonist Keiji is a young recruit, but Warner Bros. wanted an older, more established star — like their first choice, Brad Pitt. But hey, if there's anyone who knows about alien battles, it's Scientologist Tom Cruise.
