The Surrogate Among Sundance’s Big Acquisitions

The Surrogate

Sundance saw three major deals for three of the festival’s buzziest movies today: The Surrogate, Celeste and Jesse Forever, and Beasts of the South have all found buyers. The Surrogate, starring John Hawkes as a quadriplegic who seeks the help of a sexual surrogate (Helen Hunt), sold to Fox Searchlight for $6 million; Celeste and Jesse Forever, written by and starring Rashida Jones, sold to Sony Pictures Classics for $2 million; and Beasts of the Southern Wild, a poetic story steeped in magical realism, sold to Fox Searchlight for an undisclosed sum. Low-budget, emotionally authentic indie Champagne all around.
