Janeane Garofalo plays a television executive on the Adult Swim series Delocated, but there’s still a TV genre that baffles her: multiple-birth reality shows. “What shocks me every time are the testimonials of the parents,” she told us last night at New Group Gala’s Cabaret Soiree. “‘It’s so hard.’ You didn’t know that? You didn’t know that going in, that having six children under the age of two was going to be a very labor-intensive thing? ‘Who knew it was going to be so expensive and difficult?’ One kid is expensive and difficult, so I don’t understand that!” Continued Garofalo, “And this also kills me, but it’s a bit of a tangent, on those shows with the multiples, the doctor quite rightly will recommend reducing the number of viable embryos to help the babies and the mother. And of course, what do the parents say every time? ‘No, it’s God’s plan.’ Okay, now you’re into God’s plan? You were barren! You took infertility drugs! That’s all science what you just did. If you went by God’s plan, he didn’t want you to have kids. So you availed yourself of science in the beginning, so how does divinity come into it? Very convenient that they picked their divinity at that moment.” In other words: Don’t expect to see Janeane Plus Fifteen on TLC anytime soon.
