Gay men have paid reverence to Meryl Streep for decades — just check out the fun series of all-male monologues called “Streep Tease” for that adoration writ large — so isn’t it fair for her to want something from them in return? In the new trailer for Hope Springs, Streep is hoping to spice up her long marriage to Tommy Lee Jones, so she buys the book Sex Tips for Straight Women From a Gay Man; soon enough, she’s experimenting with banana fellatio in the bathroom. (It doesn’t go that well, though it makes for a good snack.) Her bid to put the “sex” in “sexagenerian” is encouraged by couples therapist Steve Carell, but can anything relight the spark of a reluctant Tommy Lee Jones? Let’s hope things don’t go pear-shaped.
