Fueled by the success of the British equivalent, TLC premieres its new show My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding tonight. The show’s executive producer spoke about the gypsies’ motivations for appearing — that is, aside from showcasing their fabulous wedding gowns: “They love and want to be Americans and they want to be seen as Americans. They’re incredibly proud to be American Gypsies … They recognize the great melting pot that is America. They want to be welcomed and they want to be accepted by Americans.” Well, clearly the best way to garner that acceptance is through the medium of reality TV — nothing brings people together like gawking at a good ole wedding-day brawl.
