If you were not previously up on the musical production Hands on a Hardbody, here are the relevant facts: It is based on the 1997 documentary about a Texas car contest (and not, you know, Chippendales); it has been in production at the La Jolla playhouse since October; it features music by Phish’s Trey Anastasio and staging by Benjamin Millipied, of Black Swan and Natalie Portman fame; and it is coming to Broadway next season. This is not a Cultural Mad Lib — this is a real musical! And though none of Vulture’s Broadway experts actually suggested a Phish–Black Swan–monster-truck combo as a way to save musical theater, that doesn’t mean it won’t work. Anyway, get ready for a major reunion jam at the Tonys, America. Five hours or your money back.
