Aaron Sorkin Not Sure About Newsroom’s Finale

Aaron Sorkin’s cable-news drama The Newsroom premieres on HBO June 24, and much has been made of its fancy cast (Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Jane Fonda, Sam Waterston) and elaborate walk-and-talk-friendly sets. But worry not for HBO’s pocketbook, says the network’s president for programming. “You’re talking to the network that has produced Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones and Luck,” he tells the Times. “This was not one of our more expensive pilots.” Creatively, though, Sorkin says he’s having a little bit of trouble with the show’s season finale. “I haven’t seen a lot of what’s on HBO right now, and so I don’t know if what I’m writing has anything to do with what else is on TV,” he says. “I don’t know what the expectation is for season finales. Are you supposed to write a cliffhanger? Are you not supposed to write a cliffhanger? Is that a cliché?” Yes, it’s a cliché, Aaron, but you’re still supposed to do it. (And call it “What Kind of Day Has It Been,” because hey, tradition.)
