NME Is Sorry for Calling Morrissey a Racist

GLASTONBURY, ENGLAND - JUNE 24: Morrissey performs live on the pyramid stage during the Glastonbury Festival at Worthy Farm, Pilton on June 24, 2011 in Glastonbury, England. The festival, which started in 1970 has grown into Europe's largest music festival attracting more than 175,000 people over five days (Photo by Ian Gavan/Getty Images)

"We wish to make it clear that we do not believe that he is a racist," the British magazine offered in a statement on the long-simmering libel case over Morrissey's 2007 comments about U.K. immigration policy. "We didn't think we were saying he was and we apologize to Morrissey if he or anyone else misunderstood our piece in that way." Okay, but everyone understood the Chinese "subspecies" quote pretty clearly, right?
