In a summer movie season filled with superheroes and outer-space shenanigans, are you ready for something completely different? You won’t have long to wait: Fox Searchlight is releasing Beasts of the Southern Wild on June 27, and this Sundance hit still stands tall above the rest of the year’s movies so far. Young newcomer Quvenzhané Wallis stars as Hushpuppy, a spirited 6-year-old girl who lives in the bayou with her ailing father and is forced to grow up fast when her community is flooded, but that’s not the whole story. In this magical realist tale, there are also Arctic beasts encased in ice who thaw up north and head straight for Hushpuppy, and you’ll get your first glimpse of them in this exclusive clip. If it all sounds too wild to work, just wait until you see it come together onscreen, courtesy of some of the year’s most gorgeous, natural cinematography (the kind that will have Terrence Malick sitting up a little straighter in his seat).
