French Filmmaker Chris Marker Dead at 91

A shot from La Jetee.

Pioneering French filmmaker Chris Marker has died, French officials confirmed to the AP. He was 91. Marker's influence extends from essay to abstract films, and his 1962 28-minute postapocalypse movie Le Jetee remains one of the staples of experimental cinema. (It was remade into Twelve Monkeys in 1995.) Marker's most recent work was a 2008 digital piece called Immemory, a CD-ROM that contains over twenty hours of material.
