As temperatures across the country hang out in the triple digits, Americans are heading to the air-conditioned sanctuary of the local multiplex — great news for the box office. Not surprisingly, The Amazing Spider-Man came in first with an estimated $65 million for the weekend (bringing it to a total of $140 million since its Tuesday opening), while Seth MacFarlane’s raunchy Ted remains strong in its second week with an estimated $32.6 million more*. Further down the list, Oliver Stone’s drug lord drama Savages exceeded expectations with $16.2 million, while Katy Perry: Part of Me’s $10 million opener put the docu-film on track to make back the $12 million it cost to produce.
