If there’s one thing that Fallon does that no one else in late night is doing, it’s music. The musical segments are what make his version of the show his. And last night’s reggae barbershop quartet is a perfect example of this: while in other hosts’ hands this might be packed with jokes and winks at the audience, but this is a relatively straightforward mashup of two disparate genres of music done with total earnestness. And it works so well! The inherent humor of the combo of reggae and barbershop makes it funny, and the talent of the singers make it entertaining.
Also, those jackets are pretty badass.
