Serious to Goofy, Good to Bad: The Definitive Tom Hanks Matrix

In his new film Cloud Atlas, Tom Hanks plays a multitude of characters — a cockney ex-boxer turned writer, a cowardly goatherd in a postapocalyptic future, a dastardly doctor on an old-timey ship crossing the Pacific — that require all sorts of accents and prosthetics and acting styles. What better time, then, to map out Tom Hanks's career in matrix (Wachowski shout-out) form? We've plotted his films out on four quadrants, from his serious roles (see: The Green Mile, Saving Private Ryan) to his delightfully goofy ones (Big, Splash), good (Philadelphia) to bad (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close).
