NBC Really Likes Buying Comedies

This week, NBC has already bought a new comedy from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, another from Jason Bateman, and ordered more episodes of existing shows Go On and The New Normal, the network has up and purchased two more comedies today. The first, Leisure Club, is from MADtv alum Stephnie Weir and follows a group of 50somethings who move into a retirement community and instantly go back to their high school selves. This is the third year in a row Weir has written a pilot for NBC (the previous two were not picked up). The second comedy pilot is from Pete Murrieta, creator of the short-lived WB sitcom Greetings from Tucson and a former showrunner on The Wizards of Waverly Place, and it revolves around three generations of a family dealing with the immigrant experience in America. All of the networks are buying up a ton of new shows right now but the recent flux of new NBC comedy projects may have to do with its two longest-running sitcoms, The Office and 30 Rock, being in their last seasons, while most of the other network’s sitcoms are scoring ratings so low that their days are numbered.
