The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Will Be Two Hours and 40 Minutes Long

Bilbo needs to stretch his legs after sitting through The Hobbit.

How do you translate the tapping of a nonexistent watch into Elvish? Because Peter Jackson has told Empire that the first of three Hobbit films will have a run time of two hours and 40 minutes. He explained: “It’s going to be about ten minutes shorter than Fellowship was … So it’s going to be officially our shortest Middle-earth yet.” Okay, sure, but Fellowship was the first installment of a nearly 1,200-page adult book, where The Hobbit just cracks 300. We’re looking at a rate of less than one book page for every movie minute. You could probably read The Hobbit faster than that.
