ABC Is Developing a Cop Comedy from ‘Community’ Writer Andy Bobrow

ABC just put into development a new sitcom called Rookie, about a woman in her 20s who attempts to reinvent herself by becoming a cop, in turn finding a surrogate family amongst her fellow police officers. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show was created by longtime Community writer Andy Bobrow, who will also serve as executive producer alongside Easy A director Will Gluck. Bobrow has been a writer/producer on Community since the start of its second season, and he’s penned some of the series’ more memorable episodes, like “Basic Rocket Science,” “Mixology Certification,” and “Pillows and Blankets,” so this should be something all you Community fans are looking forward to. As The A.V. Club points out this is just one of many cop comedies in development for the 2013-2014 season, with Rookie joining the untitled Andy Samberg/Michael Schur police sitcom, one at ABC from Bill Lawrence called Feel the Force, Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer’s paranormal cop show Strange Calls, the Beverly Hills Cop CBS spin-off, and the Fox animated series Murder Police and Axe Cop. But just because these shows are all in the same subgenre doesn’t mean they’re all the same. Reno 911!, Police Squad!, The Keystone Cops, Super Troopers or Police Academy, and Hot Fuzz are all completely different from one another despite sharing similar subject matter.
