New York film critic David Edelstein visited Hardball tonight to discuss Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, a film he reviewed as “the most neutral-seeming ‘America, Fuck Yeah!’ picture ever made.” He describes the film’s interrogation scenes as “ugly, disturbing and at the same time … they don’t exactly make us want to go out and sign a petition against torture.” When asked by Chris Matthews if more “gentlemanly rules” could defeat terrorism, Edelstein said it might work in the real world, but we sure would not be seeing those types of scenes in too many action films. “I don’t think friendly interrogation frankly is quite as cinematic,” Edelstein said.
