Lone Ranger Trailer: Armie Hammer’s Not Too Lone When He’s Got Johnny Depp

After a very train-centric teaser, the first full trailer for Lone Ranger is only fairly train-centric. Mostly, it focuses on the relationship between the Lone Ranger (Armie Hammer) and Tonto (Johnny Depp). The classic story of the cowboy left for dead who comes back to fight for justice gets a little supernatural bent with the implication that the LR was actually dead and Tonto mystically revived him. (It seems director Gore Verbinski intends on riding out on the Pirates of the Caribbean horse he rode in on.) The trailer also makes it pretty clear that this is as much Tonto’s movie as it is the LR’s, if not more so. Last year, Verbinksi said, “I was honest early on with Johnny that Tonto is the part,” and “I want the version from the untrustworthy narrator who might be a little crazy — but somehow the question is, is he crazy or is the world crazy?” “Is he crazy or is the world crazy” sounds like 90 percent of Depp’s roles, so bully for Verbinski.
