Happy Grammy Night! Dave Holmes here: music aficionado, American Idol and X-Factor recapper, occasional cog in the pop culture promotional machine, and inveterate Grammy watcher. It’s music’s most inscrutable night, made even more so by the fact that the entire industry is in either an exciting time of reinvention or a total tailspin, depending on who you work for. Will tonight be an Arcade Fire Best Album night, or a Jethro Tull Best Heavy Metal night? Let’s find out together. (Also, check out our slideshow of tonight’s red carpet looks.)

People! It's nearly Grammy time! Get your theme snacks plated and ready. Make sure your Grammy pool ballot is all filled out. See if you can't predict how they're going to address this whole Chris Brown thing. Here we goooooo!

Oh. Oh dear. Taylor Swift is opening the show in a very Cirque du Soleil fashion. This is where hanging out with Max Martin and Harry Styles will take you.

It seems like yesterday she was barefoot in gingham with a banjo, singing on a parch about how mean you were. Now she's hanging out with Italian clowns and fire dancers. Fame corrupts.

So that was going to be LAST YEAR's monologue, before Whitney died. That means they had a whole extra year to work on it. Savor that fact.

Honest question: do young artists WANT the Elton duet anymore? Think about it: the Elton John of Ed Sheeran's youth was the "This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore" Elton. A living legend, to be sure, but wouldn't Ed rather be left alone?

I feel like I've seen Elton John wear an entirely sequined jumpsuit and look substantially less gay than he does at this exact moment. Can't put my finger on why. #itgetsbetter

Dave Holmes:
Okay, Guest. I'll buy that. And it's everything that's wrong with this dumb show. The really electrifying moments are the ones where the new people come and prove themselves. Think: the Avett Brothers/Mumford thing a couple of years ago, or Janelle Monae last year (I think?). I suppose an Elton endorsement is a big deal, but so are Ed Sheeran's record sales. Let my pale little bird fly.

fun. Fact: I listened to "Some Nights" more than any other song in 2012. My iTunes most-played folder proves it. They are one of the real success stories of the year, and I'm convinced at least two of them had to get someone to cover their shift at the Coffee Bean tonight.

Listen: Capri pants make everyone look like Mary Tyler Moore in The Dick Van Dyke Show. BUT! Nate Ruess can SANG. That was a performance and a half. I want to say it will affect album sales, but I don't know whether "album sales" are a thing anymore. It'll get them twitter followers. Whatever.

I can speak to this. I snuck in a couple of years ago, after having done some red carpet stuff for the TV Guide network. (Lesson: if you walk purposefully, you can pretty much get in anywhere.) And when you're actually there, the spirit is infectious. Live music, even when it's as rehearsed as all of this, is just different.

I will say this: the Grammys could take a page from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Let these people jam. I realize that's not a very CBS thing to do, but since there's an awards ceremony every week, they've got to do something to stand out. And since all those people are already there...

So the awards portion of the awards show is over, and now we get to the grand finale, which God only knows what that'll be all about. So let's discuss Album of the Year, folks!

Though I enjoyed Channel Orange, it would have been a little embarrassing to give him the big award after that listless performance. I could have lived with Blunderbuss, El Camino or Some Nights, but Mumford & Sons have crossover appeal in a way none of the other acts do. (Though I'd bet you all my money most Academy voters don't know The Cave isn't on Babel.)

Which, by the way- so was that. Strange ending. No nominated performers, no connection to 2012 except for a quick shout to MCA. How are you going to invite Prince to your show and not hand that funky sex elf a fucking guitar?

In no order: Fun, Miguel/Wiz (brief though it was), Timberlake. Helm Tribute. I know that's 4. Also liked Black Keys/Dr. John (whose record is totally worth checking out). And Jack White.

Good question. There weren't many, and the ones they showed were pretty MOR. Clarkson, I guess? Carrie Underwood and Rihanna did nothing for me. Taylor was pretty good? Jack White's backing band and Brittany Howard were the standout females for me.
