There are currently two Steve Jobs biopics in the works - one that was already filmed starring Ashton Kutcher and another written by Aaron Sorkin - but Funny or Die beat them to the punch and is releasing a Steve Jobs biopic first. The NY Times reports this week that Funny or Die’s Ryan Perez wrote and directed a comedic biopic about Jobs called iSteve that stars Justin Long as the Apple mogul and runs somewhere between 60 and 75 minutes in length. Perez wrote the script in three days and shot it in five. The movie also stars James Urbaniak (Venture Bros.) as Bill Gates, Michaela Watkins (SNL) as Melinda Gates, and Jorge Garcia (Lost) as Steve Wozniak. iSteve will be released online via Funny or Die on April 15th.
“In true Internet fashion, it’s not based on very thorough research — essentially a cursory look at the Steve Jobs Wikipedia page,” Perez told the Times. “It’s very silly. But it looks at his whole life.” This is the longest project yet from Funny or Die. The comedy company announced earlier this year that they’ll expanding into feature films, and while that announcement applies to theatrical films and not online ones like iSteve, this is still Funny or Die’s first step in that direction. In the hands of Ryan Perez, a super talented member of FOD’s in-house stable of directors, this is definitely something to look forward to.
