Variety reports that Andrew Garfield has been cast to star in Martin Scorsese’s Silence. A passion project of Scorsese’s for more than twenty years, Silence is an adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s acclaimed novel of the same name about a Portuguese Jesuit missionary who is sent to seventeenth-century Japan and endures persecution. Garfield will play that missionary, Father Rodrigues, a part Benicio del Toro was once attached to. Ken Watanabe will play the father’s interpreter. Scorsese has had difficulty getting the movie funded because of its overt religious themes, and he understands the mostly Japanese-language film will appeal to a smaller audience than his last few very successful films. Production will start in June 2014. Do you think Scorsese made Garfield the offer over a plate of lasagna?
