Over the weekend, Lauryn Hill a) released a new song and b) coughed up $900,000 to settle her tax debt. However, the money wasn’t enough to cover the interest and penalties she incurred for not paying taxes on the roughly $1.5 million she earned from 2005 to 2007, and she received a three-month prison sentence in Newark’s federal court on Monday. The sentence comes with a $60,000 fine and three months of home confinement after the imprisonment. Hill will report to jail on July 8. “I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them,” Hill told the judge in a statement that echoed her previous explanations for her failure to file. “I had an economic system imposed on me.”
