Stephen Colbert’s Sister Loses Congressional Bid

Stephen Colbert’s sister, Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, announced she was throwing her hat into the ring for a congressional seat in South Carolina back in January. The special election was held yesterday, and Colbert-Busch, the Democratic nominee, lost to Republican Mark Sanford. Stephen Colbert broke character throughout the election cycle to campaign for and support his sister. “I’m willing to, you know, break the jewel of my own creation to try to do something for her, ” he told CNN a couple months ago. “I’m not worried about what it would do to me or my show to try to help her as myself – not as my character, to help her as myself. And you know, if people think that’s not the right thing for me to do, I don’t care. It’s my sister, and I’m willing to help her.” Sanford, despite having been the subject of an infidelity scandal in 2009, took 54.2% of the vote to Colbert-Busch’s 45.3%. I guess it’s up to Stephen Colbert to defeat Mark Sanford next time.
