Netflix is getting into the standup special game. “Beyond series, we will be expanding our Originals initiative to include broadly appealing feature documentaries and standup comedy specials,” the company announced yesterday in a letter to shareholders. Standup specials are already a huge part of Netflix’s streaming service, but so far, they’ve only showcased specials that were produced via networks like Comedy Central or independently and then sold to Netflix. Comedy Central and HBO now have a new competitor in the standup special game.
