FX is developing a miniseries about the Underground Railroad, Deadline reports. The Code is based on the 2008 book Song Yet Sung, by James McBride (who just won a National Book Award last week). The story focuses on Liz Spocott, a runaway slave in Maryland’s eastern shore who has prophetic dreams where she foresees the Civil Rights movement and modern-day hip-hop, among other things. Liz survives by following “the code” — part of the Underground Railroad’s secret communication systems — as she winds her way through Maryland’s swamplands, attempting to help others who are trying to escape. Sounds good! And it sounds like the complete and total opposite of FX’s other upcoming limited series, Fargo.
