Poor Laura Benanti. First she gets stuck as the Baroness, and then she has to manage the expectations for NBC’s live Sound of Music. “We’re not trying to remake the movie,” she announces halfway through the official trailer, as fourteen network executives cheer her on from behind the camera. “No one can remake the movie.” That sure is true! Which is why the “Sound of Music for a new generation” tagline is sort of puzzling, after all this “it’s not the movie” fanfare. Anyway, you can hear Stephen Moyer sing in this one, and it sounds like the Von Trapp children are Southern now? That “raaaaaaay” has a real twang. Maybe in the “stage musical” they were from Arkansas.
