Tim Minchin Is Making a ‘Groundhog Day’ Musical

Tim Minchin and Matthew Warchus, the composer and director of Tony-winning Matilda the Musical, are adapting the 1993 Bill Murray comedy Groundhog Day into a stage musical, The Daily Mail reports. The pair have been working on it with Danny Rubin, who co-wrote the script to the movie, and the musical will probably be debuting sometime in the next year or two. “It has to be something in its own right, not just a carbon copy,” Warchus said. “We’ll be doing the first workshop in the spring. Tim and Danny have been working on it for a while. I’ll decide where it should go - London or New York - once I see what kind of show it is.” Groundhog Day’s director/co-writer Harold Ramis and star Bill Murray do not seem to be involved at this point.
