HBO has decided to enter True Detective as a drama for this year's Emmys, rather than as a miniseries, even though the show is very explicitly an eight-episode miniseries. This means Detective will be up against the final season of Breaking Bad, and Matthew McConaughey will be up against Bryan Cranston, Jon Hamm, and Kevin Spacey in the lead-actor category. To be clear, no nominations have been announced yet (that's months away), but one assumes BB, Mad Men, and probably House of Cards will be in the running again, and that McConaughey will earn a nomination should he submit for lead actor in a drama. As always, though, awards shows are fickle! And the Emmys are particularly capricious!
