A few weeks ago, SNL aired one of its most hilarious, subversive sketches in recent memory: “Dyke & Fats,” a ‘70s cop show starring Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant. Vulture caught up with McKinnon last night at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of the movie Intramural to learn more about the origins of the masterpiece.
“We were both really tired one night,” McKinnon explains, “and I just said to Aidy, ‘Man, dyke is tired,’ and Aidy said, ‘Fats is tired, too.’ And then it became our beautiful thing that we had together and we wanted to make something out of it,” McKinnon says. They enlisted the help of writers Chris Kelly and Sara Schneider — “who are geniuses,” according to McKinnon — and things went from there. “It’s something we wanted to do for a long time.” Since the sketch aired, it’s garnered quite the positive reaction, and some are clamoring for a “Dyke & Fats” movie. Would McKinnon ever go for it? “My dreams, my fondest dreams,” she said. There’s hope.
