When Vulture spotted True Detective director and brand-new Emmy winner Cary Fukunaga at the HBO Emmys after-party, we had to confront him with the hard questions, like: Did he braid those man-braids himself? “Oh, I don’t have these kinds of skills,” Fukunaga told us. “I had help.” Did he ever consider of wearing the more traditional man-bun? “Nah,” he said, laughing once we’d told him how popular the man-braids had become on Twitter. “For tonight, I just thought business in the front, party in the back.”

Fukunaga still seemed surprised about this win, for Best Directing in a Drama Series. “I was a deer in headlights on that stage. I feel like I usually get by on speeches. Tonight, I was definitely caught off guard. But also I had a list. Not a speech, but a list, and I don’t know … I totally bumbled through the whole thing. It’s alright. Whatever. Live and learn.” And finally: Did winning make him reconsider his position on directing another season of True Detective? “Uh, no. Not yet. It was always going to be a one-time thing for me.”
