The weekend following Labor Day is always a slow one at the box office, with only new release, The Identical (which our critic Bilge Ebiri called a “hot, holy mess”), completely tanking with a paltry $1.9 million. To give you some context, that is basically what Guardians of the Galaxy, the box office champ for a fourth weekend, averages every 15 minutes. Anyway, the Chris Pratt star vehicle brings its grand total to $294 million — meaning it will soon become the first movie this year to cross the $300 million threshold. The rest of the box office rankings were essentially the same from last weekend: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came in second with $6.5 million, If I Stay was third with $5.7 million, Let’s Be Cops was fourth with $5.4 million, and The November Man rounded out the top five with $5.4 million. Ho-hum. At least next week we’ll be getting a fresh crop of releases!
