Key and Peele Are Developing a Movie Starring Substitute Teacher Mr. Garvey

Entertainment Weekly’s comedy issue cover faces and guest editors Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele gave the magazine a few interesting scoops on their upcoming projects this week, and among the updates is news of a possible film starring their megahit substitute teacher character Mr. Garvey. “We’re in negotiations at Paramount to make a Substitute Teacher movie,” Key said. “Two of our writers are penning it. Well, they’re not penning it as we speak — it’s getting there.”

As for what else the Peabody-winning duo are working on, they also said that their Police Academy reboot is moving along with The Mindy Project’s Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen signed on to pen the script, though Key and Peele mentioned that they’re not sure yet whether they’ll be in the film: “When we start working with the script and seeing it, we’ll make the decision,” Peele said. “Is Key and Peele a distraction from Police Academy? We’ll figure it out. Either way, we’ll make the best call for the movie.”

Key and Peele also gave an update on their movie project with Judd Apatow, which is being completely revamped. “We’re starting at step one again with that,” Key said. “There was an idea with Judd, [but] we’re not doing that idea anymore. Now we’re going to start from ground zero and start all over again.”

As if a Comedy Central show and three movie projects weren’t enough, Peele also revealed that he’s developing a horror movie with Darko Entertainment with a potential to serve as a director. “That’s a straight horror movie. I want to be essentially a thriller director,” Peele said. “I’m a big fan of horror movies. Rosemary’s Baby, Stepford Wives – I’m sort of taking a lead from that genre of film. It’ll be, just, very cool.”
