The Clowns of America Are Trying to Protect Their Totally Not Terrifying Image

The latest circus-themed season of FX’s American Horror Story features a scary murderous clown named Twisty, and according to THR, the negative depiction has moved real organization Clowns of America International to take a stand against clown prejudice in the media. “Hollywood makes money sensationalizing the norm,” said Clowns of America president Glenn Kohlberger in a statement. “They can take any situation no matter how good or pure and turn it into a nightmare.” Just to make his stance on Twisty clear, Kohlberger – who also goes by clown name Clyde D. Scope – added: “We do not support in any way, shape or form any medium that sensationalizes or adds to coulrophobia or ‘clown fear.’” Meanwhile, Clowns of America International has been suffering from falling numbers – “its aging base is made up of 2,500 clowns, down from 3,500 in 2004” – but maybe that’ll change once Louis C.K. and Zach Galfifianakis’s show Baskets premieres on FX in 2016.
