Welcome to The Second City Archives, in which we post an exclusive clip each week of some of comedy’s biggest superstars performing early in their careers on the legendary Chicago stage. Second City has generously given us a glimpse into their extensive archive of live performances, and over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing some rare and retro comedy never before seen on the web.
This week’s clip comes from Second City’s 1998 revue The Psychopath Not Taken featuring ensemble performers Kevin Dorff, T.J. Jagodowski, Susan Messing, Tami Sagher, Rich Talarico, and Stephnie Weir. In the above clip, Stephnie Weir masterfully improvises a solo act as a chain-smoking psychic named Vera who scans the audience for “skeptic energy” and attempts to blow some minds with her (lack of) psychic gifts. Weir joined the cast of MADtv two years later, where Vera became one of her most popular recurring characters.
