and the internet goes wild

Katy Perry’s Dancing Sharks Were the Real Super Bowl Winners

If there’s just one thing thing to take from last night’s Super Bowl XLIX, it’s Katy Perry’s two dancing sharks. It doesn’t matter who won — hell, it doesn’t even matter who played — during Katy Perry’s Halftime Super Bowl Show, she danced alongside two insane-looking sharks, and the world went wild. Come on, just look at them:

(They’re even singing! Kind of!) It’s true, everyone mostly fell in love with Left Shark, who seemed to be taking his shark choreography off-book. This guy’s a free spirit:

And it didn’t take long for Tumblr to take hold …

… which brought along the rest of the internet hive-mind:

(Disclaimer: I made this one and it is awful.)

And a (completely ridiculous and unnecessary) mystery was born: Who were these sharks? Can we see them again? Can they go on tour? How do we buy merchandise? How do we continue to suck the life out of a fun but fleeting moment? Hey, maybe Snoop knows:

But it takes years and years of dance training to be a Dancing Shark at the Super Bowl, so when Reddit figured out that (duh!) the two shark dancers were in fact Katy Perry’s BFFs (!) and background dancers, Scott Myrick and Bryan Gaw (or maybe some guy named Garett?), it really wasn’t that big of a surprise. Myrick even popped in to answer some of their questions: “I dance for Katy on her prismatic world tour and have been with her for 5 years … I danced as a gingerbread man in her first tour the California Dreams tour. And also her big purple cat, kitty purry. This is just another day in KP land.” And what’s it like to play a Dancing Shark at the Super Bowl? “The visibility was … Terrible. I ran into a palm tree but the camera missed it ;)”

Sports are fun. Sharks with legs are more fun. Long live sharks with legs … until we move onto the next thing.
