We are exiting the realm of endless sequels and entering that of the experimental sequel that does not follow the rules. First, there was Neill Blomkamp’s Aliens project, which might pretend the last two installments in that saga didn’t exist, and now there’s Toy Story 4, which is purportedly angling to be a buccaneering rom-com. Speaking to Disney Latino, Pixar’s president Jim Morris said (translated from Spanish): “It’s not a continuation of the end of Toy Story 3. Temporarily it is, but it will be a love story.” Morris explained that TS3 completed a trilogy, and this fourth installment, penned by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, is a separate tale with less interaction between toys and children. Follow-up questions abound: New toys? Old toys? Will this movie just be about Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head’s midlife crises? Breathe — all of these questions, and more, will be answered July 16, 2017.
