Last night’s New Girl wasn’t a particularly good episode, but it did include a valuable scene about how to talk about race. Winston met a pretty girl (Transparent’s Kiersey Clemmons) who invited him to join her at a protest against the police; he demurred, and then lied about the fact that he himself is a cop. He attempted to vent to Nick about the situation, but … it’s Nick, and this is New Girl. Things got goofy. And yet the brief scene did get at an important idea, namely that a lot of that “talking” should involve white people listening. If these conversations come with Damon Wayans Jr.’s pretty solid Eddie Murphy impression, consider that a bonus.
