The internet won’t stop talking about Idris Elba playing James Bond, and Idris Elba is sick of it. “Honestly, it’s a rumor that’s really starting to eat itself,” he said during an appearance at the British Film Institute on Tuesday. Elba maintained that the overwhelming public interest in his casting has made it an impossible dream: “If there was ever any chance of me getting Bond, it’s gone.” Still, though, you shouldn’t beat yourself up too much for sharing all those listicles; you’ve just been an unwitting pawn of the true mastermind, who has been hidden inside MI-6 all along. “Daniel Craig actually set the rumor off,” he recalled. “About four years ago, he said, ‘Idris Elba would be a great Bond,’ and then it started to creep. I blame Daniel.”
