It’s been two and a half years since Solange released True and one year since she attacked Jay Z in an elevator, and finally, we have some new music from her. At the L.A. party for the Queen Latifah–starring HBO biopic Bessie, she performed “Rise” “for Ferguson and Baltimore.” Rap-Up reports that she told the crowd, “We’re gonna attempt to play a song for the first time that may or may not be on the record, but it probably will be.” Rather than bursting with energy, the song is breathy and quiet: “He is only a man with flesh and bones / He bleeds just like you do.”
