Jon Stewart Has No Jokes for Charleston in Last Night’s Stirring Monologue

Jon Stewart opened Thursday’s The Daily Show with the topic on everyone’s mind: the deadly shooting at the historic Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. Normally, Stewart said, his job is fairly easy — he watches the news, writes a joke about it, and he’s “out the door.” But there’s some news you just can’t joke about, and so for Charleston, Stewart said he has “nothing but sadness.” He went on to criticize the “nuanced language” some in the media have used to explain the attacker’s actions, calling the hate crime a violent “terrorist attack.” “This wasn’t a tornado,” he put it plainly, “this was a racist.”
