On Saturday morning at Vulture Festival, attendees were treated to a roundtable discussion with three incredibly different screenwriters. Featuring Karen McCullah (Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You, Ella Enchanted, She’s the Man, The House Bunny), Michael Weber (500 Days of Summer, The Fault in Our Stars, The Spectacular Now, Paper Towns), and Michael Showalter (Wet Hot American Summer), the trio touched on all aspects of the glamorously gritty screenwriting process, as well as relaying advice and sharing anecdotes about their respective films. For starters? It turns out that the ending of Legally Blonde was rewritten after test audiences weren’t keen on the original conclusion, with Elle Woods and her fellow Harvard-ians forming a “Blonde Legal Defense Club.” For more fun tidbits, watch the discussion below.
