Nine lives were lost yesterday at the horrific church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, so for last night’s Daily Show, Jon Stewart introduced the episode by being straight-up with the audience and admitting that it would be far from a joke-filled night. “This wasn’t a tornado. This was a racist,” Stewart said. “This was a guy with a Rhodesia badge on his sweater. So I hate to use this pun, but this one was black and white. There’s no nuance here.” Watch Stewart’s full response to the shootings above, in which he brings up a sad but true point about the state of racism and senseless violence in America today: “And that’s the thing… Al Qaeda, all those guys, ISIS, they’re not shit compared to the damage that we can apparently do to ourselves on a regular basis.”
