George Lucas’s trio of Star Wars prequels concluded ten years ago, yet they continue to polarize fans. Each film has its apologists and its detractors (Gary Kurtz, producer of the original trilogy, once said, “I’m not a fan”), and arguments can get pretty heated. But (almost) everyone can agree on one thing: Jar Jar Binks is the worst.
With his tortured English and penchant for ruining everything, the gangly, gregarious Gungan has been cited by fans as emblematic of everything that’s wrong with the prequels. But one person continues to vehemently defend Jar Jar: George Lucas. And Disney apparently deserves some of the blame for that.
“I can’t even begin to tell you how much of an influence Disney has had on me,” Lucas told fans at Disney’s D23 expo in Anaheim on Friday. “I will say one secret that nobody knows: Not many people realize that Goofy was the inspiration for Jar Jar Binks.”
Yes, Goofy, Mickey’s lovable lunkhead pal, was the template for the most annoying on-screen character in decades.
Lucas went on, “I know that you will look at him differently now. It’s pretty obvious, actually, but, um, I love Goofy and I love Jar Jar.”
You’ll never be able to watch A Goofy Movie the same way again.
