Jerry Lewis Gave ‘The Day the Clown Cried’ to the Library of Congress

Over fifty years after it was made, one of Jerry Lewis’s biggest regrets will finally be headed to theaters. According to the LA Times, Lewis has given the negative of his unreleased 1972 film The Day the Clown Cried – about a clown who leads Jewish children to the gas chamber during World War II – to the Library of Congress with a catch: It can’t be screened publicly for ten years. A few clips from the film have surfaced online over the past few years, but Lewis has long been vocal about regretting the film and not wanting anyone to see it, saying at Cannes in 2013 that “you will never see it, no one will ever see it, because I am embarrassed at the poor work.” Read more about the movie here, then start your countdown clock for 2025.
