Your Guide to Mile-High Binge-Watching This Summer

Traveling this summer? Get ready to watch Tomorrowland or Hot Pursuit while you’re flying. No, these masterpieces won’t have digital surround sound or 3-D, but watching them on tiny, smudged screens can be addictive. That’s because there are few things more pleasurable than the guilt-free, soporific qualities of a truly terrible movie while heading to a new destination. Airlines always showcase the latest blockbusters and a seemingly random selection of TV shows, but the experience of watching these at home versus up in the air is entirely different. Onboard, you’re held hostage, melting away any of the twinges you may feel while binge-watching (lets call it wing-watching) Bloodline at home on a perfect summer weekend. Up here, it’s you, a pair of headphones, and a couple hundred zombie passengers carrying out an identical ritual.

These in-between hours, when text messages go undelivered and tweets stop accumulating, are precious. (Do not give in to the siren song of in-flight Wi-Fi.) Of course, prepared fliers arrive with shows downloaded on their own devices, but there’s something weirdly pleasurable about submitting to the whims of random airline offerings. But not every in-flight entertainment experience is created equal. To help ease the trauma of summer vacation ticket-buying, here are some of the major airlines’ in-flight offerings this month. Of course, like most travel-related amenities, you’ll have to pay for films. Usually in-flight movies are complimentary in first class or on international flights; they often run about $5 when flying domestic. Film options change every month and vary according to flight paths and aircraft. Learn what’s showing on your exact flights by checking the airlines’ websites.

And if you choose a dud when you’re up in the air, don’t worry. You’ll forget the plot when the plane hits the tarmac.
