What’s New on Hulu: September 2015

Photo: Hulu

At the beginning of (and throughout) every month, Hulu adds new movies and TV shows to its catalogue. Here is a quick list of several that you might be interested in. Some of these may also have previously been on Hulu, only to have been removed and then added back. Feel free to note anything we've left out in the comments below.

Though it has started to produce its own programming recently, Hulu features more network TV than pretty much any other streaming service, which means that September brings a massive haul of content to its site. If you were worried about Too Much TV over the summer, then avert your eyes from the back half of Hulu’s September schedule. Getting through fall TV’s going to take a lot of work, and if you’re serious about keeping up with everything including the Kardashians, then now’s the time to start training your TV-marathon muscles. Lucky for you, Hulu’s September offerings make for the perfect training schedule.

Cardio: Elementary

Any good workout regime spends time building your stamina — where better to start than with CBS’s gender-bent take on Sherlock Holmes? Totaling 72 episodes, or about 54 hours, Elementary’s three-season (so far) run has enough going for it to keep you pleasantly occupied for the first couple of weeks of the month. As you build your stamina, don’t forget to keep your heart rate up with tough questions, such as: “How is Lucy Liu so great?” and, “Is this better than the U.K. Sherlock?”

Available September 1.

Sprints: The Mindy Project and The Awesomes

The Mindy Project is one of Hulu’s greatest assets going into the fall schedule, and, so as not to make us all lose a day racing to get to the end of the season, the site has decided to only parcel out one episode a week. This presents another challenge, however, as it’s important to have all your Mindy quotes, GIFs, and cameos down as soon as each episode airs. In our TV-exercise regimen, this is speed-training, and it’ll come in handy when Empire and Shondaland return a few weeks later. Get your Twitter fingers on the mark. And, if you want to try your hand at a lower-profile but still wonderfully quotable comedy, do some practice sprints around the track with Seth Meyers’s The Awesomes.

The Mindy Project premieres on September 15; The Awesomes on September 8.

Peak TV-race day: September 24

Okay, now we’re at the big event. Let’s hope you watched some of this live, because otherwise you’ve got a long race ahead of you. Either way, here’s our recommended next-day viewing order, with a few annotations on the conditions of the course: Empire (sprint/why didn’t you watch this live?), Nashville (settle into a nice country tempo), Black-ish and The Goldbergs (water/humor break), Rosewood (conditions unknown), Law and Order: SVU (turn off your mind and let muscle memory guide you here), The Mysteries of Laura (rough terrain — why is this still part of the course?), Modern Family and The Middle (grin and bear it through the first leg, then relax and enjoy the end of the race).

Peak TV-recovery day: September 28

Even as pilots start getting canceled and you trim your watch list, it’s important not to let the lactic acid build up in your pop-culture muscles. A week after the strain of the first batch of pilots, take a cool-down day and speed through an easy downhill course. Check in with Chace on Blood & Oil, waltz through Once Upon a Time, do quick wind sprints on Quantico, then ease into Fox’s comedy offerings: Bob’s Burgers, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Family Guy, and The Last Man on Earth.

Disclaimer: TV marathons are not a true substitute for exercise.
