As Sandra Bullock tells EW, her role as a battle-hardened political operative in Our Brand Is Crisis was originally written for George Clooney: “About two and a half years ago I put out feelers saying, ‘I’m not reading anything I’m excited about. Are there any male roles out there that [the filmmakers] don’t mind switching to female?’” Clooney, who is producing the film, didn’t mind giving up his starring spot to his Gravity co-star, and after David Gordon Green signed up to direct, Bullock jumped aboard. The film is a fictionalized version of the 2002 Bolivian presidential election, with Bullock playing an American strategist working on the reelection campaign of a Latin American president. Judging from this trailer, the movie mixes Clooney’s liberal cynicism with the white-savior tropes of Bullock’s The Blind Side.
