There's going to be a decent helping (read: veritable boatload) of Mad Max and Transformers projects rolling out in the next ten years. If you like things that go boom, you're probably happy — elated, even. (Or maybe you're respectively half-happy, half-sad.) Regardless, stick with us just so you know exactly how much you have to endure, because whether you like it or not, these blockbuster bundles of adrenaline will be a part of your moviegoing life for awhile. You'll probably have the responsibility of introducing a child (either of yours or someone else's) to one of these forever franchises, so plan accordingly.
We've previously written about Tran5former5 (styling our own) and Michael Bay's involvement, but we didn't know the extent of the saga's plans. At a recent MIPCOM Q&A, however, Hasbro's head honcho Steven J. Davis officially confirmed that at least four sequels are in the works. "Nine of some of the most creative writers I have ever worked with, shepherded by Akiva Goldsman, who many of you may know won an Academy Award for A Beautiful Mind and written a bunch of great movies ... plotted out the next 10 years of Transformers," he said, according to Variety. "Similarly, we are doing the same in television and in digital. So stay tuned, Transformers 5 is on its way, and 6 and 7 and 8." Oh boy.
Mad Max received a similar update over the weekend, via BBC's Top Gear: "In [the Fury Road production] process, we had dug down deep into the backstory, not only of the characters, but of every vehicle. How the steering wheels became religious artefacts and things like that," director George Miller said. "So we ended up with two scripts, without really trying ... We're talking to [Warner Bros.] about it as we speak, but which one of the two stories will happen next, I'm not so sure."
This news fits with Tom Hardy's admission to Esquire UK, from earlier in the year, that he'd be a part of at least three more films — some of which might be prequels, sequels, and an Imperator Furiosa stand-alone. What a decade, what a lovely decade!
