1) The UCB Show
Can you believe it’s been almost 18 years since the Upright Citizens Brigade TV show first aired? The offbeat sketch show and cult favorite launched a new era of improv and defined an entirely new brand of comedy. Now, the UCB4 have returned to host a weekly variety showcase on Seeso.
This time around, The UCB Show is a venue for the best sketch, characters and stand-up homegrown at the UCB Theatres in LA and NYC. The show is filmed with a live audience at UCB Sunset in Hollywood and focuses on the current array of talent performing today. If you want to chomp on some amazing sketch comedy and already love off the wall shows like SNL (also on Seeso), then you need to check out The UCB Show.
2) The Cyanide and Happiness Show
The Cyanide & Happiness Show is an animated comedy series based on the ridiculously popular web-comic, which has cultivated a bonkers online following of more than 4.9 million YouTube subscribers and 821 million views in August. The series is a twisted, whirlwind journey to the depths of human depravity — plus fart jokes and just the right amount of social commentary. Our recommendation: go catch up on season one so you’ll be ready for season two, premiering January 7th exclusively on Seeso.
3) Sammy J & Randy in Ricketts Lane
Sammy J & Randy in Ricketts Lane is a musical comedy about two mismatched housemates, one of whom is a human (Sammy J) and the other a purple puppet (Randy). It’s a fantastic take on the buddy comedy, which follows Sammy J and Randy as they bumble through various 1970s-looking milieus searching for love, meaning, and good times. You’ll come for the music, but stay for the deep meditation on two lonely, self-obsessed dudes and how their narcissism is slowly eating away at their souls. Also: this is an Australian comedy so you almost definitely haven’t seen it yet!
4) Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place
Have you seen Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace? To quote Garth Marenghi himself, it’s “a television program so radical, so risky, so dangerous, so goddamn crazy, that the so-called powers that be became too scared to show it.” Marenghi continues, “Only now, in the worst artistic drought in broadcast history, does the channel come crawling back, cap in hand and suitably ashamed, asking if your humble fabulist could once more retreive Darkplace from the boxes in his spacious basement.”
Darkplace is presented as a lost classic: a television series produced in the 1980s, which never saw the light of day. Commentary from the “original” cast is peppered throughout the show, in which characters such as Marenghi and Dean Learner look back on the making of the show. Darkplace is chock full of ridiculous 1980s fashion, jokes and special effects which make it the perfect TV show to smoke…an herbal cigarette to.
5) The Kids in the Hall
That’s right. You can go to Seeso.com right now, sign up for their free beta, and watch the entire first season of The Kids in the Hall for free. That’s exactly $0.00 for one of the funniest chunks of comedy programming ever created.
